The Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, ordered the immediate cancellation of the 2026 Egungun festival across Ogbomosoland following security concerns, according to The Guardian.

Why the festival was cancelled

The palace said the decision followed reports of violent attacks and other acts of lawlessness linked to the festival. It said the monarch took the step to protect lives and property in the town.

Directive to security agencies

The Soun directed all law enforcement and security agencies to ensure strict compliance with the order. Security agencies were asked to step up surveillance and enforcement across Ogbomosoland.

A wider concern across Oyo State

Ogbomoso is not alone. In recent years, the Egungun festival season has led to clashes, road blockades and attacks on passers-by in some parts of Oyo State and Lagos, prompting police warnings and restrictions on street processions. Traditional rulers and the police have repeatedly urged masquerade groups to keep celebrations peaceful.

What Egungun means

Egungun is one of the oldest festivals in Yoruba culture. Masquerades represent the spirits of ancestors, and the festival is traditionally a time to honour family lineage. Many devotees in Ogbomoso see it as an important part of their heritage, and the hope is that future celebrations can return in a safe and orderly way.
