Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Ogbomoso, one of the oldest hospitals in Nigeria, marked 119 years of service on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, with a ceremony at the BUI Auditorium.

From Baptist Medical Centre to teaching hospital

The hospital's story began on March 18, 1907, when medical missionary Dr George Green and his wife Lydia arrived in Ogbomoso from the United States. Their first successful operation marked the start of what became the Baptist Medical Centre, a name many Ogbomoso residents still use today.

In 2009 the hospital became the teaching hospital of Bowen University, Iwo, training doctors, nurses and other health workers while continuing to serve patients from Ogbomoso and beyond.

New leadership in 2026

  • Emeritus Professor Oladosu Akanbi Ojengbede was named Chairman of the Management Board, effective April 2026.

  • Prof. Samuel Ademola Adegoke has served as Chief Medical Director since January 2025.

Serving the community

This year the hospital also marked World Hepatitis Day with a public awareness programme and has advertised vacancies for clinical staff, residency training and other roles. Its College of Nursing continues to admit students for the 2026/2027 session; applicants should confirm details on the official BUTH website.

Why BUTH matters to Ogbomoso

For more than a century, the hospital has been part of daily life in Ogbomoso, from births and surgeries to training generations of nurses. Its long Baptist heritage is also part of what makes Ogbomoso unique, alongside the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary.
