Olubadan and Ooni Rise to Greet Soun of Ogbomoso at Ibadan Event, Video Goes Viral

A short video of the Olubadan and the Ooni of Ife standing to welcome the Soun of Ogbomoso at an Ibadan event has sparked conversation about humility and respect among Yoruba monarchs.

A brief moment between three of Yorubaland's most prominent traditional rulers has got Nigerians talking. At an event in Ibadan on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, both rose from their seats as the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, entered the hall.

What happened

In the video, which spread quickly across social media, the Soun is seen bowing slightly to the Olubadan before embracing the Ooni. The exchange lasted only a few seconds, but it drew thousands of reactions online.

How Nigerians reacted

  • Many praised the Olubadan for his humility, noting that he is the oldest of the three monarchs.

  • Some commenters debated seating arrangements and tradition among Yoruba obas.

  • Others argued that talk of rivalry between the monarchs is mostly a social media creation, and that the video shows warm relations.

Why it matters to Ogbomoso

For many Ogbomoso indigenes, the moment was a source of pride. Since his installation as the 21st Soun of Ogbomosoland in September 2023, Oba Olaoye has worked to raise the profile of the town at home and in the diaspora. Public gestures of respect between leading monarchs also send a message of unity across the region.
