Security has been one of the biggest issues in the Ogbomoso zone in 2026. Here is a simple timeline of the key events so far.

Timeline

  • May 15: Gunmen attack schools in Oriire LGA and abduct pupils and teachers.

  • May 22: Teacher Esiyan Adegboye is buried in Ogbomoso.

  • Mid-year: The Soun of Ogbomosoland cancels the 2026 Egungun festival across Ogbomosoland over violent attacks and lawlessness.

  • Early July: The NUT in Oyo State suspends its strike over the abduction.

  • July 10: The Presidency confirms that the remaining pupils and teachers have been freed after 56 days; eight suspects are arrested.

  • Late July: Community groups, education stakeholders and University of Ibadan lecturers support the freed victims and bereaved families. Three suspects in the slain teacher's case are sentenced, according to local reports.

  • July 30: The VGN in Oriire asks for compensation for members who died during the crisis.

  • October 27: The OPC reports arrests of suspected kidnappers in Oriire and Olorunsogo LGAs.

What has changed

The events have pushed school security, rural policing and support for community guards to the top of the local agenda. The Oyo State Government has also defended its use of surveillance aircraft, saying the results speak for themselves.

What residents are asking for

  • Permanent security posts near rural schools.

  • Better funding and training for Amotekun and vigilante groups.

  • Faster response times and working emergency numbers.

  • Support for families of victims, including those of fallen volunteers.

This timeline will be updated as new events happen.
